Samajwadi Party MLA and the son of veteran leader Azam Khan, Abdullah Khan was disqualified from Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday after a Moradabad court convicted him in a 15-year-old case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reports said Abdullah Khan and Azam Khan have been sentenced to two years of imprisonment. However, the court granted bail to both of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A senior official of the Assembly said Abdullah Azam Khan was disqualified following the conviction and his seat has been declared vacant from February 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both the son and the father were found guilty of stopping a public servant from performing their responsibility and other charges after staging a demonstration on a state highway in January 2008 after their convoy was stopped by police for checking to prevent an attack on a CRPF camp in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur in December 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abdullah Khan was earlier disqualified in 2020 when the Allahabad High Court set aside his election to the Assembly which came into effect on December 16, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In October 2022, Azam Khan was disqualified after a court sentenced him to three years of imprisonment in a hate speech case. He represented Rampur Sadar in the assembly. Later in the by-poll conducted on the seat in December, Khan was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Akash Saxena.
