The Government of India has continued with their stance on the online sales of medicines and drugs as the Union Health Minister chaired a high-level meeting in the matter on Thursday. According to reports, the meeting was called by the Union Health minister over the unsatisfactory response to the show-cause notices issued to the pharma sector\u2019s bigwigs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As per the reports, the health ministry had issued a show-cause notice to a number of big companies such as Amazon, Flipkart, Practo, Tata1mg, PharmEasy, Apollo, Zeelabs, Heathcart and more for the sales of drugs and medicines without having the required licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A government official told the media that the stand by the centre comes as the sales of over-the-counter medicines are prohibited in the country and further cited the growth of drug abuse among young generations to be the reason for the Government’s action. The official while talking to the media also said that the Centre are firm to issue a ban on the sales of drugs online as data can be misused by pharma companies in their favour to increase sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The official also highlighted that there can be grave effects that can be faced by the country if online sales of drugs continue on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to reports, the Centre has been getting questioned by various organizations that have been alarming the Government that the online sales of drugs and medicines are a violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, of 1940. It was also reported that several drugs, that can only be sold under a valid prescription of a doctor, are also being sold irrespective of the prescription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Delhi High Court in 2018 ordered a ban on the online sale of drugs across the country and there have been pending cases that seek to ban the sales of drugs and medicines in various courts in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Union Health Ministry had issued a show cause notice to online pharmacies to seek an explanation on why the Centre should not take action against them for the online sale of medicines that violate the law pertaining to matter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
