The voting for the 59-assembly seat in Meghalaya was held today, with the National People’s Party (NPP) likely to retain power. The Conrad Sangma-led NPP has emerged as the single largest party, winning 20 seats and leading in five assembly constituencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The current Chief Minister of the northeastern state has won the South Tura constituency and defeated BJP\u2019s Bernard Marak with 10,090 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The United Democratic Party (UDP) comes in second with 11 seats. A dire performance by the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Mamata Banerjee-founded TMC and BJP have only won 4 and 2 seats, respectively. Both parties are leading in one assembly constituency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chief minister Conrad Sangma has hinted at a post-poll alliance with estranged ally Bharatiya Janata Party in case of a hung assembly scenario. According to the latest reports, CM Sangma, after falling short of the majority, calls Amit Shah for support to form the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it turned out to be a heavy defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Congress, which had emerged as the single largest party with 21 MLAs in the 2018 elections, was left with no sitting MLAs following the dramatic exodus of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). Following the defecation, the party’s state chief and Shillong MP Vincent H Pala was left to lead the party on his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Vincent H Pala, who was contesting from the Sutnga Saipung Constituency in East Jaintia Hills, lost to the NPP’s Santa Mary Shylla by 1,828 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hill State People\u2019s Democratic Party, Independent, and People’s Democratic Front have won 2 seats each, and Voice of the People Party won 5 seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are 60 seats in Meghalaya, however, only 59 were up for election as the election for one seat was adjourned due to the death of the candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
