Although there has been no notice put up yet, university sources on Thursday confirmed that the inquiry committee had upheld its 2016 decision.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1530795362441{border-top-width: 10px !important;border-right-width: 10px !important;border-bottom-width: 10px !important;border-left-width: 10px !important;padding-top: 10px !important;padding-right: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;padding-left: 10px !important;background-color: #d6d6d6 !important;border-radius: 10px !important;}”]The incident: Students from JNU organised an event on Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru who was hanged in 2013. This was to be done the day after Guru’s third death anniversary.

The event organisers had pasted posters across the campus inviting students to gather for a protest march against “judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat” and in solidarity with the “struggle” of Kashmiri migrants at the Sabarmati dhaba in the campus.

The programme called “A country without a post office — against the judicial killing of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhatt”, was supposed to showcase the protest through poetry, art and music.

This set off the row, with the Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staging a protest to demand expulsion of the organisers.

The university administration ordered a “disciplinary” enquiry and said the event organisers “went ahead without permission.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Earlier in 2016, the JNU panel had recommended the expulsion of Khalid and two other students along with the imposition of fine on Kumar, the then student’s union president.

A financial penalty was also imposed on 13 other students for violating the disciplinary norms.

Following the imposition of penalty, the students had then approached the Delhi High Court, which had directed the varsity to place the matter before an appellate authority to review the panel’s decision.

A source told PTI that the “the penalty has also been reduced for some students”.

In February 2016, Khalid, Kumar and Anirban Bhattacharya were charged with sedition and arrested in connection with the campus event, which led to massive agitation. Kumar, Khalid and Bhattacharya are out on bail.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
