The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has deleted references to India’s first education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Jammu and Kashmir’s conditional accession to the Union of India from its Class 11 political science textbooks, barely a week after it omitted several references to Mahatma Gandhi from the Class 12 syllabus.

A line from NCERT Class 11 Political Science textbook’s first chapter, ‘Constitution — Why and How’, has been revised to omit Maulana Azad’s name from the constituent assembly committee meetings and now reads: “Usually, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel or BR Ambedkar chaired these Committees.”

The first education minister of Independent India, Maulana Abul Kalam ‘Azad’, played a vital role as he led the Congress in the elections for the new Constituent Assembly of India to draft the Constitution. In his sixth year as Congress president, Azad led a delegation to negotiate with the British Cabinet Mission.

The revised edition of the NCERT textbook has also omitted several references to Jammu and Kashmir’s conditional accession to the Union of India.

The NCERT has edited out a sentence referring to the erstwhile state’s conditional accession under the now-abrogated Article 370, in the textbook’s Chapter 10, titled, ‘The Philosophy of the Constitution’.

The deleted line said: “For example, the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to the Indian union was based on a commitment to safeguarding its autonomy under Article 370 of the Constitution.”

In August 2019, the BJP regime at the Centre junked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and abrogated Article 370.

The Centre also bifurcated the former state in two Union Territories— Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh—by introducing and passing the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill in the Rajya Sabha on August 5, 2019. The Lok Sabha cleared the bill the next day.

Earlier this month, the NCERT sparked a controversy when it omitted several references to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, Hindu-Muslim unity, and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ban from its Class 12 syllabus.
