The Bihar government on Tuesday released a notification for the release of 27 prisoners, and among those was a former MP Anand Mohan, a gangster-turned-politician who was convicted in the 1994 murder of IAS officer G Krishnaiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The former MP was sentenced to death in 2007 by a lower court in Bihar for killing the then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaniah. However, the Patna High Court commuted it to life imprisonment which was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier this month, the Nitish Kumar government abolished the provision that forbade the remission of a prison sentence for people found guilty of killing a public employee while they were on duty. The government tweaked Prison Manual, 2012 to make changes to rule 481 to facilitate Mohan’s release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The notification said, In light of the Bihar state sentence remission council meeting on April 20, the decision was taken for the release of prisoners having served the actual sentence of 14 years or a sentence of 20 years with remission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tomorrow, when his parole ends, he will be sent back to the Saharsa prison in Bihar. Mohan is anticipated to be released from custody on April 27 after the necessary paperwork is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Former MP Mohan’s release and the Prison rule change have sparked intense debate, with Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) labelling the rule change as anti-Dalit. She urged the Bihar administration to change its mind, arguing that Anand Mohan Singh’s release would infuriate the Dalit community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She said the move by the Nitish government to prepare the release of Anand Mohan after changing rules in the case of the brutal murder of extremely honest IAS officer G Krishnaiah, who belonged to a poor Dalit family from Andhra Pradesh’s Mehboobnagar (now in Telangana), is being discussed for negative and anti-Dalit reasons in the whole country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
