Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday, July 22, hit out at his successor PM Narendra Modi saying he \u201crejects the culture of constant self-praise and jumlas of PM as against solid policy framework\u201d for driving the engine of growth\u201d.<\/p>\n
Singh was speaking at the Congress Working Committee meet in New Delhi, the first to be held after Rahul Gandhi revamped the body after taking over as party president in December last year.<\/p>\n
The meeting comes after the no-confidence motion debate in Lok Sabha on Friday when Rahul Gandhi had launched a scathing attack on PM Modi and his government. The CWC meet took it forward with PM Modi coming under severe criticism from former PM Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.<\/p>\n
Sonia Gandhi said the rhetoric of PM Modi shows his \u201cdesperation\u201d and it reflects that the \u201creverse countdown\u201d of the Modi government has begun, reported The Indian Express (IE).<\/p>\n
Sonia Gandhi also cautioned the people about the \u201creign of despair and fear\u201d heaped upon India\u2019s deprived and poor.\u201cWe have to rescue our people from a dangerous regime that is compromising with the democracy of India,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She talked about forging a front against Modi-led NDA, saying, \u201cWe are committed to make alliances work and we are all with Congress President Rahul Gandhi in this endeavour.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking at the meet, Manmohan Singh, assured Rahul Gandhi his full support in his onerous task of \u201crestoring India\u2019s social harmony and economic development\u201d. \u201cWe will support Rahul Gandhi in his \u2018onerous\u2019 task of restoring India\u2019s social harmony, economic development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He lashed at the culture of constant self-praise and \u201cjumlas\u201d of PM Modi.\u00a0 Manmohan Singh pointed out that PM Modi\u2019s claim of doubling farm income by 2022 will require the agriculture sector to grow at a rate of 14 per cent, which, he said, was nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n
His remarks come in response to Modi\u2019s assertion earlier this month that his government had to steer the nation\u2019s economy out of \u201cunbelievable\u201d decay left by an \u201ceconomist prime minister and a ‘know-it-all’ finance minister\u201d.<\/p>\n
Modi had said that when he came to power things were terrible. \u201cWe were a part of the fragile five economies. Even the budget figures were suspicious,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Singh had, reported News18, attacked the government over a series of banking frauds, saying the money swindled almost quadrupled from Rs 28,416 crore in September 2013 to Rs 1.11 lakh crore in September 2017. \u201cIt pains me to see how rather than standing up to all these challenges, the government\u2019s response has been to stifle dissent when deficiencies are pointed out,\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n
Before Singh, Rahul reminded members of \u201cthe role of Congress as the voice of India\u201d and the \u201cresponsibility of the party as BJP attacks institutions, Dalits, tribals, minorities and the poor.\u201d<\/p>\n
He described the newly constituted CWC as an \u201cinstitution comprising experience and energy, as a bridge between the past, present and the future,\u201dthe News18 report said. He called upon Congressmen and women \u201cto rise and fight for India’s oppressed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rahul Gandhi revamped the committee last weekand dropped veterans like Digvijaya Singh, C P Joshi, Janardan Dwivedi, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Oscar Fernandes. Opting for a blend of experience and youth, Gandhi appointed JyotiradityaScindia, JitinPrasada, TarunGogoi, Siddaramaiah, Sheila Dikshit, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mallikarjun Kharge to the committee.<\/p>\n
The strength of the new body is 51 \u2014 23 main members, 18 permanent invitees and 10 special invitees.<\/p>\n
However, the Congress chief who had recently voiced his support for 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies has included only three women \u2014 Sonia Gandhi, Ambika Soni and Kumari Selja \u2014 in the committee.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
