During the launch of the Shakti scheme, a women MLA identified as Roopakala M Shashidhar from Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) was seen driving a KSRTC bus under the assistance of the official driver. Under the aegis of the Shakti Scheme, women and transgenders across age and economic strata in Karnataka can travel free of cost in KSRTC and BMTC buses. The scheme can be availed by women who are domiciled in Karnataka for journey across the state. As per reports, the free travel service is likely to benefit over 41.8 lakh women passengers every day. According to officials, implementation of this scheme would cost the state exchequer an approximate amount of Rs 4,051 crores annually.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Karnataka state government further noted that this scheme will minimize the travel expenses of working women from the poor and lower middle class families. Speaking about the scheme, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah opined that the scheme will empower women and will also increase their representation in public life. The chief minister added that women and transgender irrespective of caste, religion and age are covered under this scheme. Furthermore, even the students in the state can also avail the free bus travel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the KSRTC officials, nearly 5,102 among 5,548 BMTC buses and 6,239 among 7,482 KSRTC buses will have this facility for women. Moreover, 3,892 NWKRTC and 3376 KKRTC buses are also included in this scheme.
