The government of India has finally in a major humane upgrade for the truck drivers in India has directed for mandatory air conditioned cabins inside trucks starting 2025.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari while addressing an event announced the decision.

The decision comes as a significant move giving respite to the drivers who drive for 10-12 hours a day and travel for days to reach to their destination without caring about the weather conditions and have to reel under extreme temperatures at some or other point.

The government has given a transition period of 18 months to the industry to make the necessary upgrades.

Gadkari said, in India some drivers drive for 12-14 hours unlike other countries, where they have a restriction on the number of hours for bus and truck drivers. He said, the drivers face 43-47 degree Celsius temperature while operating and their condition must be taken imagined and taken into consideration.

Gadkari said he wanted to solve this issue since he took oath as the Minister.

The step taken is also expected to reduce accidents as in many cases, the reason behind the accidents are driver falling asleep as they do not get proper rest and get fatigue.

While brands like Volvo and Scania provide an AC in their high-end trucks, a majority portion of trucks running in the country do not have this facility.

The decision comes just days after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s truck rides in India and the USA.

Gandhi in May took a truck ride from Delhi to Chandigarh and during his recent visit to the US, he took a ride from Washington DC to New York.
