Today, opposition leaders from all over the nation are congregating in Patna to discuss the potential of forming a unified front to take on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the general election of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, Tamil Nadu chief minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader MK Stalin, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee were among those seen travelling to Patna, according to the reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There will be 16 opposition parties in total in the Bihar capital today, these do not include the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, which is in power in Telangana and is up for election this year, the YSR Congress, which is in power in Andhra Pradesh, the Biju Janata Dal, which is led by Naveen Patnaik of Odisha, and the Janata Dal (Secular), which is in power in Karnataka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar will serve as the meeting’s host. As part of his outreach initiatives over the past several weeks, the Janata Dal (United) leader has personally met with legislators from other states who are not members of the BJP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aam Aadmi Party of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is planning to leave the meeting if the Congress does not support his opposition to an ordinance that would give the central control over the posting of bureaucrats in the nation’s capital. This has drawn attention ahead of the conference. According to sources, Kejriwal would object if the Congress continues to be non-committal, as it has been so far, and this might kill the idea of a united opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The party’s principal spokesperson, Priyanka Kakkar, said on Thursday, she was unaware of this issue and that their top leaders will decide whether or not to participate in a walkout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The AAP leader further claimed that Congress had struck an agreement with the BJP in which it would abstain from voting when the ordinance was introduced in the Rajya Sabha, so lowering the bar for approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ordinance was introduced by the BJP government to overturn a Supreme Court ruling that gave Delhi’s elected government the authority to enact laws and regulate services in the city. It was promulgated by President Droupadi Murmu last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
