Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid homage to those who resisted the emergency that was declared by then PM Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975 and worked to strengthen India\u2019s democratic spirit. As the nation completed 48 years of emergency, PM Modi said the 21 month period remains an unforgettable period in India\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking to the Twitter, PM Narendra Modi wrote that he pays homage to all courageous people who resisted the Emergency and worked to strengthen democratic spirit. He added that the ‘dark days of emergency’ remains an unforgettable period in the history, which is totally opposite to the values that the Indian constitution celebrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During 1975 to 1977, the then Prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi had declared a state of emergency across the country. It was officially issued by President Fakhrudin Ali Ahmed under article 352 of the constitution because of prevailing internal disturbances. The Emergency was in effect from 25 June 1975 and ended on 21 March 1977. In accordance to the order, the Prime minister had the authority to rule by decree, allowing elections to be cancelled and civil liberties to be suspended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diverse comments on PM Modi\u2019s tweet started coming immediately. One person posted a video which showed PM Modi as the tiger and the opposition as the people following him. Another social media user said the culprit of emergency were trying to become champions of free speech. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
