Manipur has been witnessing escalated violence since May 3 after violence between two ethnic groups broke out. The neighbouring state, Mizoram’s BJP unit has come up with a demand for imposition of the President’s Rule in Manipur, as an attempt to restore peace in the violence-hit state.

BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha issued a statement stating that more than 100 people have lost their lives because of the ongoing ethnic violence which broke out in Manipur on May 3. The statement added that around 220 churches have also been burnt down as a result of ethnic violence.

India’s northeastern state of Manipur witnessed an ethnic clash between two inhabiting communities of the state, the Meitei people, a majority that lives in the Imphal Valley, and the minority tribal community from the surrounding hills, which mainly includes the Kuki and Zo peoples.

The dispute started with Meitei demanding the status of the Scheduled Tribe under the constitution and current tribes in the state opposing its demand. The tribal community also complained that the state government is trying to prosecute them from their homeland in the name of reserved forests, protected areas, and wildlife sanctuaries.
