Tensions between DMK MP Gnanathiraviam and Bishop Barnabas, who is the Bishop-designated of the Church of South India, Tirunelveli Diocese, resulted in a fight between their supporters, according to reports by India Today. Earlier, there were inconclusive talks between the Bishop and the DMK MP over multiple matters, which also involved the appointment of the correspondent of Palayangottai\u2019s St John\u2019s College. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reportedly, several schools and colleges in the state are managed by the CSI, Thirunelveli Parish for which elections are carried out to elect the correspondents. DMK MP Gnanathiraviyam was selected as the correspondent for Palayangottai\u2019s ST John\u2019s College, earlier. As far as reports are concerned, Bishop Barnabas had removed Gnanathiraviyam from the post at St John\u2019s College and replaced him with Arul Manickam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Disappointed with the decision, the DMK MP\u2019s supporters reached the college on Friday and both sides broke into a fight on the premises. Later on Monday, Bishop Barnabas sent his supporter, namely Bishop Godfrey Noble to visit the aforesaid college and solve the ongoing matter with MP Gnanathiraviam\u2019s supporters. Meanwhile, the DMK MP\u2019s supporters are demonstrating against the decision of Arulmanickam to take charge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A video shared by India Today shows the Bishop\u2019s supporters being thrashed by the DMK MP supporters. Bishop Godfrey Noble, who was sent by Bishop Barnabas can be seen being slapped and kicked too. According to reports, a complaint was lodged by Bishop Godfrey Noble. Following that, the Palayamkottai police had registered a case against Gnanathiraviyam and 20 others, related to the alleged assault on Godfrey Noble. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
DMK general secretary Duraimurugan took cognizance of the matter and issued a notice seeking an explanation for the incident within seven days. The notice also stated that there were complaints that the MP had brought disrepute to the party and to its development. The general secretary further asserted that the DMK MP has to appear before the party high command within seven days of receipt of the notice and provide explanation or send it through.
