Which strangest meal have you ever tried or heard of in your life? Once you discover what’s cooking in China, all the weird food fusions that have recently gone viral online will be forgotten. The nation’s taste buds have discovered a craving for something you’d never imagined to eat…consider consuming some nicely spiced and fried stones. Yeah its, stones!

You did read that correctly. Stir-fried stones are one of the street dishes attracting customers for a try and taste. Following a viral hit of a video showing the dish being prepared, it appears to be China’s newest food craze that is driving people crazy online.

In the viral video, a chef is seen preparing hot pebbles for foodies and serving them. The dish, which is popularly known as Suodiu, includes sauces and spices in addition to river rocks as its main ingredient. Netizens are referring to the dish as World’s hardest dish.

Suodiu is a dish that has been around for hundreds of years, thus it is not a recent addition to Chinese cuisine.

Boatmen would gather some river stones and use them in food preparations to satisfy hunger when they became trapped in the middle of a river while delivering goods and ran out of food. It is thought that boatmen have been passing down the recipe informally for many centuries.

Visitors are instructed to suck on the tiny rocks to enjoy the dish’s rich and spicy flavour, which originated in the province of Hubei in eastern China.

Suodiu, which means suck and dispose of, is the name of the dish because they are told to suck off the flavours before spitting out the rocks.

On a teppanyaki-style grill, sellers coat pebbles with chilli oil, top them with garlic sauce, and stir-fry everything with a mixture of minced garlic and sliced peppers.

According to recordings on Xiaohongshu, China’s version of Instagram, these street chefs occasionally narrate their every action with rhymes while they prepare the ingredients.
