One more person died from injuries received in a hospital on Friday, bringing the total number of fatalities from the gunfire exchange between security personnel and alleged rioters in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district to three, according to officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Late on Thursday, as the violence in the state took yet another life as a whole security personnel used tear gas to disperse a mob that had assembled in the centre of Imphal, the capital of Manipur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The crowd was gathered to present flowers in memory of a former merchant navy officer who had been murdered earlier that day during a shootout in the Kangpokpi neighbourhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The deceased man’s body was taken to Imphal’s Khwairamband Bazaar and placed inside a traditional coffin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to officials, the protesters, who were led by women, threatened to bring the coffin in a procession to Chief Minister Biren N Singh’s home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They set fire to tyres in the middle of the road to thwart police trying to apprehend them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the police and members of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) arrived on the area, they started firing tear gas into the air to disperse the gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To defuse the situation, the body was then taken to the mortuary of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The army reported that earlier in the day, unarmed rioters opened fire in the village of Haraothel in the Kangpokpi area, killing one person and injuring several others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The nearby army unit reported unconfirmed casualties and warned that other bodies might be lying on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
