As the tomato prices continue to rise and hurt the common man\u2019s budget across the country, the government on Friday said the tomato prices are expected to stabilize within the next 15 days. Consumer Affairs Ministry Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said prices will start falling once crops from Sirmaur and Solan start arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singh said tomato prices will start coming down once the crops arrive from Himachal Pradesh. Singh added around this time of the year, prices of tomatoes always increase. This year due to poor weather conditions and supply issues, the prices have skyrocketed. Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have affected the tomato crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the official figures of the Consumer Affairs Department, retail prices of tomato increased Rs 60-Rs 70 per kg in Delhi, whereas in states like Uttar Pradesh they have reached Rs 120 per kg.The secretary further added the government has also launched a tomato grand challenge from today where it has sought ideas from people on improving preservation and storage of tomatoes and also to ensure its supply throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the four metros the retail price of tomato is Rs 60 in Delhi, Mumbai is Rs 42 per kg, Kolkata is Rs 75 per kg and Chennai is Rs 67 per kg. Among other major cities, the prices stood at Rs 52 per kg in Bengaluru, Rs 80 per kg in Jammu, Rs 60 per kg in Lucknow, Rs 88 per kg in Shimla, Rs 100 per kg in Bhubaneshwar and Rs 99 per kg in Raipur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The maximum price of Rs 122 per kg was reported from Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) and Bellary(Karnataka). In Delhi-NCR tomato prices at Mother Dairy\u2019s Safal stores have doubled to nearly Rs 80 per kg in the last one week as supplies have been affected due to rains in key producing state.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
