Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh hinted at a foreign hand behind the ongoing violence in the state on Saturday. He claimed that external elements may have had a hand in the ethnic clashes. He added that the violence seemed \u201cpre-planned\u201d. The northeastern state has been witnessing escalating violence since May 3. The clashes between the two ethnic groups erupted following a Tribal Solidarity March in the hill state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to reports, the Chief Minister remarked that Manipur shares its border with Myanmar and China is also nearby. Nearly 398 km of borders are porous and unguarded. He asserted that there are security forces deployed on the frontiers, however even a robust and extensive security deployment can\u2019t cover such a vast area. N Biren Singh further remarked that considering what is happening, he can neither deny nor vehemently affirm that the violence seems pre-planned but the reason is not clear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chief Minister continued that the Centre and the state government were putting efforts to restore peace to the state. He affirmed that he also spoke with his Kuki brothers and sisters over the telephone earlier in the day, stating to forgive and forget. Furthermore, he also claimed that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi\u2019s visit to the state during this time seemed like a \u201cpolitical agenda\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking on Rahul Gandhi\u2019s visit to the state, N Biren Singh questioned why the Congress leader did not come earlier, stating that they cannot stop anyone, but it has been 40 days since the violence took place. He expressed that he didn’t think the timing was right and that the visit seemed to be a political agenda. The Chief Minister mentioned that after Rahul Gandhi came to the state there was an incident in the market and the BJP office was attacked. He enquired whether the congress leader came for the situation in the state or for political mileage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As of now, the clashes between the Meitei and Kuki community claimed 100 lives in the northeastern state. The Tribal Solidarity March that led to the clashes was in response to the Meitei community\u2019s urge for Scheduled Tribe status, which eventually saw a strong opposition from the tribal kuki community.
