Congress MP BK Hariprasad is the Opposition\u2019s joint candidate for the post of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman, election for which is to be held tomorrow (Thursday, August 9), a day before the Parliament\u2019s monsoon session comes to an end.<\/p>\n
BK Hariprasad, 64, is a Congress member of Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.<\/p>\n
The BJP-led NDA has fielded Janata Dal (United) MP Harivansh Narayan Singh, who was editor of Prabhat Khabar and is close to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, as its candidate.<\/p>\n
The opposition parties, who have joined hands against the BJP, decided to field a joint candidate to take on the NDA nominee. Today is the last date for filing of nominations.<\/p>\n
The Congress decided to field its nominee as the joint opposition candidate after the other parties in the opposition bloc chose not to nominate their members, said media reports.<\/p>\n
Reacting to the news, Hariprasad told news agency ANI, \u201cThe party (Congress) must have taken this decision after a lot of thinking. We will talk to all the opposition leaders and discuss what is to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n
Opposition parties that were uneasy with a Congress candidate for Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson election, have decided to end their differences and back the candidate, sources said, putting the anti-BJP front back on track.<\/p>\n
The Congress decided to field a candidate last evening after Sharad Pawar’s party, which had agreed to field Vandana Chavan, backed out after Naveen Patnaik indicated that his party would not support her candidature. The NCP said it needed the backing from both Shiv Sena and the BJD.<\/p>\n
Shiv Sena, however, has said it will support the NDA candidate. The Shiv Sena had abstained from voting on the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha moved by the Opposition in July against the Narendra Modi government.<\/p>\n
BJP-ally Akali Dal too confirmed today that they will be supporting the government’s candidate for the election tomorrow.<\/p>\n
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has called Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and sought support from his party, BJD, to elect NDA\u2019s nominee for Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.<\/p>\n
The government is counting on support from the AIADMK, K Chandrashekar Rao’s TRS and Naveen Patnaik.<\/p>\n
