Mirabai Chanu, who won silver in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will lead a five-person Indian delegation to the World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2023. According to Olympics.com, the Riyadh competition, which runs from September 4 to 17, is a qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Chanu will compete in the 49kg women’s category. While Bindyarani Devi, the gold medalist from the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, will take part in the women’s 55kg competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Achinta Sheuli, who will participate in the 73 kg weight class alongside current national champion Narayana Ajith, makes up the men’s team. The current Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships are being held in New Delhi, and Shubham Todkar, who won the gold medal in the 61kg category, will also be competing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jeremy Lalrinnunga, a champion at the Youth Olympics, will not compete for India at the World Weightlifting Championships in 2023 as he missed the trials because of injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second competition of the year for Mirabai Chanu will be the World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh in 2023. The 28-year-old Manipur lifter competed in the Asian Championships in May and placed sixth after undergoing a five-month rehabilitation regimen following hip surgery in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Asian Games will take place before the World Weightlifting Championships in 2023. With the exception of Shubham Todkar, the same squad will represent India at the continental showcase competition, which will take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mirabai Chanu and Bindiarani Devi, the 2017 world champions, are presently undergoing training at the St. Louis Squat University in the United States under the direction of veteran weightlifter Dr. Aaron Horshig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During an interview national coach Vijay Sharma said, Mirabai Chanu is not injured. He also said, here, we are working on her strength. She will participate in both the Asian Games and the World Championships, he added.
