Google Doodle is today celebrating American scientist and women’s rights advocate Eunice Newton Foote. She was the first to recognise the greenhouse effect and its connection to global warming. In honour of her contributions, Google produced an 11-slide interactive doodle that uses her accomplishments to explain the greenhouse effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foote, who was born in Connecticut in 1819, went to Troy Female Seminary, a school that used to encourage students to enroll in science courses and take part in chemistry lab experiments. Since then, she has devoted her life to science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She carried out an experiment in 1856 at a time when women were often ignored by the scientific community, and it helped to create current theories about climate change. She found that the glass cylinder holding carbon dioxide heated up the most in the sun when mercury thermometers were placed inside of it. Foote became the first scientist to link growing carbon dioxide levels to atmospheric warming as a result, making her a key figure in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She performed a second investigation on air static electricity after publishing her initial findings. Her two American physics papers were the first by a woman to be published. These debates sparked more research projects that revealed the greenhouse effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She established the groundwork that has allowed scientists all over the world to advance climate science today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, she spent time advocating for women’s rights. Foote went to Seneca Falls’ inaugural Woman’s Rights Convention in 1848. She was the fifth person to sign the Declaration of Sentiments, which called for women to have equal rights in society and the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following those conversations, scientists conducted additional experiments that revealed the Greenhouse effect, which states that when gases like carbon dioxide capture solar heat, the temperature of Earth’s atmosphere progressively increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After Foote’s death in 1888, her accomplishments received little to no attention for more than a century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
