Dev Raturi, a devoted Bruce Lee fan from Kemriya Saur village in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district, once auditioned for a role in a Hindi movie in front of Puneet Issar (known for playing Duryodhan in Mahabharat) in 1998, but unfortunately, he didn’t succeed. Little did he know that his life’s trajectory would take a remarkable turn, leading him to make a significant impact in the Chinese film industry and become widely recognized and successful in China, even finding mention in school textbooks as an inspirational rags-to-riches tale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eighteen years after he arrived in China to work as a waiter in a restaurant, Dev’s story has been included in English textbooks for class 7 students in schools of Xi’an city, Shanxi province. Dev, born into a farmer family in Tehri Garhwal, India, learned karate and aspired to go to China for further training in martial arts. To support his family, he did menial jobs in Delhi for a decade before finally landing a waiter job in an Indian restaurant in Shenzhen, China, in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While working as a waiter, Dev diligently learned Mandarin, and his dream of training in martial arts persisted. However, his initial hopes were dampened when locals informed him that he needed to go to the Shaolin Temple for further martial arts training. Despite the setback, Dev persevered and worked hard for the next seven years, ultimately rising to the position of manager at a high-end restaurant, Red Fort, in Xi’an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a fortunate twist of fate, Dev’s life took a dramatic turn when he met a Chinese director visiting his restaurant in 2017. The director offered him a small role in a TV series named SWAT, which turned out to be a breakthrough moment. Since then, Dev has acted in over 35 Chinese films and TV serials, including popular ones like My Roommate is a Detective, where he plays a prominent role.
