The India Meteorological Department on Monday forecasted that India is most likely to see normal rainfall during the second half of the monsoon season, August and September, following excess precipitation in July. Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across the country as it led to floods and landslides.

The weather department further stated that normal to above normal rainfall is mostly expected over east-central India, parts of the east and northeast region and most subdivisions along the Himalayas. Addressing a press conference, India Meteorological Department Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that below normal rainfall is predicted in most parts of peninsular India and western parts of northwest and central India.

The India Meteorological Department Chief noted that at 258.6 mm, northwest India registered the highest rainfall in July since 2001. He mentioned that the country saw a turnaround in monsoon rains from a nine per cent deficit in June to 13 per cent excess rain in July. Notably, India has recorded 467 mm rainfall against a normal of 445.8 mm in the monsoon season so far, which is an excess of five per cent.

IMD Chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra remarked that El Nino warming of the waters in the Pacific Ocean near South America has not affected the monsoon rains as yet. He added that the El Nino is generally associated with the weakening of monsoon winds and dry weather in India.

As far as reports are concerned, in July, India experienced rainfall approximately 15% above the normal levels. The monsoon season reportedly witnessed a remarkable recovery from a 10% deficit in late June to an impressive 6% above the long-term average by the end of July. Reports claim that this year’s July is on track to become the wettest in the past 29 years in India, with the record for the highest ever pan India rainfall in a single month being held by 1988, with 374 mm.
