According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain poured across Odisha today as a well-marked low-pressure region in the Bay of Bengal first became a depression and then a deep depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meteorological office urged fishermen from going out to sea until Wednesday afternoon due to the expected rough sea conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the IMD’s bulletin, the deep depression over the northeastern Bay of Bengal was located about 160 km east-southeast of Khepupara in Bangladesh and 420 km east of Digha in West Bengal and was moving north-northwestward at a speed of 25 kmph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By Tuesday evening, it is expected to proceed northwest and cross the coast of Bangladesh east of Khepupara before moving west-northwest through Gangetic West Bengal over the next 24 hours, according to the advisory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the weather office, under its influence, squally conditions are likely to predominate, with wind speeds averaging 45\u201355 kmph and gusting as high as 65 kmph along and off the shores of Bangladesh and West Bengal. Over the following 12 hours, the wind speed is forecast to rise to 55-65 kmph with gusts to 75 kmph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to the weather, Odisha experienced severe rainfall, with the state capital Bhubaneswar receiving a record 259.2 mm of rain in the last 24 hours as of 8:30 am on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was the highest rainfall Bhubaneswar has seen in August to date, the reports said. According to U S Dash, a scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, it exceeded the previous record of 254.2 mm of rainfall that was received on August 20, 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A red warning (take action) has been issued by the IMD for four districts, an orange warning (be prepared) for thirteen districts, and a yellow warning (be updated) for ten districts until 8.30 am on August 2 has been issued.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
