The Allahabad High Court upheld a Varanasi court’s order allowing the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry out a survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque complex. Reportedly, the High Court dismissed the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee’s plea, ruling that the survey can resume immediately. In the ruling, the High Court further stated that the ASI survey is necessary in the interest of justice and it needs to be conducted under certain conditions.

Speaking to ANI on the matter, Vishnu Shankar Jain, the lawyer representing the Hindu side in the Gyanvapi survey case asserted that the Allahabad High Court ruled that the ASI survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex can start. He added that the session court order has been upheld by the High Court.

Earlier, the High Court had on July 27 reserved till August 3 its verdict on a plea against the ASI survey. A Varanasi district court on July 21 directed the ASI to conduct the survey , including excavations, wherever necessary to assess whether the mosque was built at a place where a temple existed earlier.

The Archaeological Survey of India had earlier commenced the survey on July 24, however it was stayed within a few hours by the Supreme Court after the mosque committee approached it. The apex court allowed time for the committee to appeal against the lower court’s order. Reportedly, the counsel of the mosque committee had expressed his apprehension that the survey and excavation would cause damage to the structure. Nonetheless, the Centre has ascertained that the survey will not alter the structure in any way.

As far as reports are concerned, a plea has been lodged in the Allahabad High Court demanding protection of Hindu signs and symbols in the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi. The Gyanvapi mosque row commenced after a group of women moved to a lower court in Varanasi for permission from a Hindu deity in the mosque complex on all days asserting that a temple used to exist earlier.
