Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Wednesday that the Maharashtra government is examining love jihad laws implemented in other states to determine which provisions can be adopted locally. He plans to discuss with the Director General of Police the creation of a standard operating procedure (SOP) for police stations, specifically dealing with cases involving inter-religious marriages or courtships followed by religious conversion under false pretenses. The objective is to sensitize police stations to handle such cases effectively and prevent tensions within communities. Policemen failing to take timely action will face consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, Fadnavis emphasized that the state would provide psychological assistance to love jihad victims. He clarified that if an adult woman willingly marries, the law cannot intervene in the union. He also promised an investigation into a case of a minor being forced to elope with a person from a different community in Chatrapathi Sambhaji Nagar’s Phulambre taluka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
BJP group leader Pravin Darekar highlighted the issue of Hindu women being deceived by individuals assuming false identities, feigning love, and forcibly converting them. He stated that after such marriages, these women are subjected to torture, abandonment, or even violence. Darekar commended Yogi Adityanath’s bold decision in Uttar Pradesh to enact a law against illegal conversions, and he received support from BJP’s Prasad Lad. The BJP leader advocated for the implementation of a love jihad law in Maharashtra similar to the one in Uttar Pradesh. Love Jihad is a term commonly used by right-wing activists to allege that Muslim men use marriage as a tactic to entice Hindu women into religious conversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additionally, Lad brought attention to the concept of land jihad, where illegal religious structures are erected on land, followed by further construction and pressure on the police through protests. He alleged that funding for such activities is derived from illegal sand mining, liquor sales, and gambling.
