A Parliamentary panel has recommended government to avoid gold plating of airports and advised cost-effective development of infrastructure at airports so that common people can afford to air travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The panel headed by Rajya Sabha MP Sujeet Kumar emphasised while voting against the concept of gold plating of airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The panel emphasized that the common passenger is the key stakeholder in the aviation industry, and their desire to travel by air will increase with the growth of the economy. The committee further recommended that airport travelling charges should remain affordable and competitive compared to other airports in the Asia Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India is a developing country, and passengers are price-sensitive. The government’s national civil aviation policy prioritizes affordability and sustainability. The committee observed that most people use airports only for travel, baggage check-in, and baggage retrieval upon arrival. Therefore, passenger service should be the primary focus rather than other peripheral aspects, according to the report presented in Rajya Sabha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The quality of airport infrastructure is crucial for a country’s international competitiveness and foreign fund flow. While airport terminals should be comfortable and facilitate a hassle-free journey, they need not be overly luxurious. Private operators should avoid the concept of gold plating airports by incorporating expensive features that increase project costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Committee recommends that modernisation of airports, both run by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and privately run, must be carried out efficiently and cost-effectively using technology to reduce operational costs. Given India’s resource constraints, the government must ensure that airport infrastructure is developed in a sustainable manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Funding for airport development has been becoming increasingly limited. Creating top-notch aviation infrastructure requires a significant amount of money, and therefore, private sector participation in the airport industry needs to increase in order to bridge the gap in resources.
