Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday introduced three bills in the Lok Sabha to replace Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act. These are the laws that originated during the British colonial era. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Introducing the new bills, Amit Shah stated that provision of sedition offences will be completely repealed in the new bill replacing the Indian Penal Code. He added that he can assure the House that the new bills will transform the country\u2019s criminal justice system. The Union Home Minister further affirmed that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 will be referred to the parliamentary panel for thorough examination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amit Shah asserted that the laws are slated for replacement as their original intent was to safeguard and bolster the British administration, with the major focus being punishment rather than the delivery of justice. He added the newly introduced three bills are aimed at prioritizing the protection of rights for the citizens of India. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He continued that from 1860 to 2023, the country\u2019s criminal justice system functioned according to the laws made by the British. With these three laws there will be a major change in the criminal justice system in India. He stated that under the bills, the government has set the goal that conviction ratio has to be taken above 90 percent. He explained that an important provision has been laid down where sections which provide for 7 years or a greater jail term, under all those cases forensic team\u2019s visit to the crime scene will be made compulsory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking into consideration the aforesaid steps, the Union Home Minister remarked that the intention will shift from punishment to the provision of justice.
