The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced on Monday that the Pragyaan rover of Chandrayaan-3 encountered a 4-meter diameter crater positioned 3 meters ahead of its intended location on the lunar surface yesterday. Sharing the images on X (formerly Twitter), ISRO stated, On August 27, 2023, the Rover encountered a 4-meter diameter crater positioned 3 meters ahead of its location. The Rover was directed to backtrack and is now proceeding safely on a new path.

ISRO confirmed that the rover is now safely navigating on a different trajectory. In a previous announcement on Sunday, ISRO highlighted that two out of the three objectives of the Chandrayaan-3 mission have been achieved. These accomplishments include successfully demonstrating a safe and gentle landing on the lunar surface and showcasing the rover’s mobility on the moon. The agency further reported that in-situ scientific experiments are underway, and all the payloads are functioning as expected.

A notable milestone of the Chandrayaan-3 mission involved the unprecedented analysis of the lunar south pole’s soil characteristics, including temperature variations up to a depth of 10 centimeters beneath the surface. ISRO presented a graphical representation illustrating the moon’s soil temperature changes at various depths.
