Olympics silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu made the decision to not lift at the World Championships next week but she will mark her attendance at the compulsory Olympic qualifying event and complete the required formalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The World Championship gold medallist, who competes in the 49kg weight category, has her focus on the Asian Games that start less than 20 days after the World Championships. Surprisingly, the only missing silverware in her cabinet is an Asian Games medal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The head coach Vijay Sharma said that there is very little time between the Asian Games and the World Championships. Since participation at the Worlds is compulsory, they have decided that Mirabai will only travel to Riyadh and give the body weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that she will finish all the mandatory protocols like giving the dope test, if it\u2019ll be required. However, she will not lift any weight, she will only participate. Mirabai Chanu had won the World Championships in 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the Paris Olympics qualification rules, a lifter has to compete in the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup on a compulsory basis. As per the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) rulebook, a lifter only needs to attend the weigh-in to mark his\/her presence at the Worlds. However, the lifter doesn\u2019t need to compete a lift. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The World Championships are scheduled to begin on September 4 in Riyadh while the Asian Games will begin on September 23 in Hangzhou. The short switch between the two events makes it harder for lifters to manage their weight as well as peak at both the events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mirabai Chanu registered an entry weight of no more than 60kg at the World Championships, based on which she has been placed in Group D of the competition.
