After a successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the south pole of the Moon on August 23, the Indian Space Research Organisation on Tuesday said that the Pragyan rover of the Chandrayaan-3 mission has unambiguously confirmed the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface near the south pole, through first-ever in-situ measurements.

The Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) instrument onboard the Pragyan rover also detected aluminium, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon and oxygen, as expected.

LIBS is a scientific technique that analyses the composition of materials by exposing them to intense laser pulses, according to ISRO.

ISRO took to X, formerly Twitter and said, In-situ scientific experiments continue. Through first-ever in-situ measurements, the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) instrument onboard the Rover unambiguously confirms the presence of sulphur (S) on the lunar surface near the south pole.
