Every year on September 8, the world celebrates International Literacy Day in order to highlight the importance of literacy and education in everyday life. The day serves as a reminder of the value of individual growth, literacy, and societal advancement.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) marked the day for the first time. The day serves as a sharp reminder that literacy is a basic human right that is essential for maintaining one’s dignity.

To promote the global objective of literacy, the day is honoured everywhere. According to UNESCO figures, 76 crore adults and children worldwide were estimated to be functionally illiterate in 2020. Learn about the day’s significance and history.

At the World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy, the concept of International Literacy Day was first raised. Iran’s capital city of Tehran hosted the meeting in 1965. The meeting provided a favourable environment for the notion of a unique day devoted to promoting literacy on a worldwide scale to take root.

Later, September 8 was proclaimed as International Literacy Day by UNESCO. The day was declared in 1966 during the 14th UNESCO General Conference. On September 8 of the following year, 1966, the globe observed its first International Literacy Day.

According to information provided by UNESCO, around 775 million individuals worldwide lack even the most basic literacy abilities. According to the statistics, one in five adults are still illiterate. The research also shows a significant gender discrepancy between men and women.

Children’s inconsistent attendance at school or absences from class were made worse by the COVID pandemic.

The COVID-19 epidemic had a significant impact on educational facilities. Unfortunately, a large number of kids who missed school due to the pandemic never went back to finish their education.
