At the World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy, the concept of International Literacy Day was first raised. Iran’s capital city of Tehran hosted the meeting in 1965. Later, September 8 was proclaimed as International Literacy Day by UNESCO. The day was declared in 1966 during the 14th UNESCO General Conference. On September 8 of the following year, 1966, the globe observed its first International Literacy Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
