Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has hailed the central government\u2019s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war and said the country has done the right thing. He said prioritising India\u2019s sovereign and economic interest first while appealing for peace, was the right decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Singh\u2019s statement came ahead of G20 Summit in Delhi from September 9 to 10 for which he has also been invited to a G20 dinner on Saturday. Former PM Manmohan Singh has served the country for two terms of the Congress-led UPA government between 2004 and 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Singh also expressed his concern about using foreign policy for domestic politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Singh observed that foreign policy has become more significant in domestic politics during India’s G20 presidency than it was during his tenure. He stated the significance of exercising restraint in using diplomacy for party politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The veteran Congress leader also expressed his happiness over India\u2019s rotational chance for the Presidency of the G20 during his lifetime. Dr Singh further said foreign policy has always been an important element of India’s governance framework, but it is fair to say that it has become even more relevant and important to domestic politics today than earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Former PM emphasised the importance of exercising restraint in using diplomacy and foreign policy for personal or party politics while acknowledging that India’s standing in the world is rightfully an issue in domestic politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The former Prime Minister underlined the forum’s purpose as a platform for policy coordination to tackle global challenges such as climate change, inequality and confidence in global trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Singh also spoke about Chinese President Xi Jinping\u2019s decision to skip the G20 Summit. He said it was unfortunate. Dr Singh expressed hope that PM Modi would take the necessary steps to protect India’s territorial and sovereign integrity and defuse bilateral tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The former PM also spoke on India’s role in the global economy and said India\u2019s external trade as a share of its GDP doubled in the decade from 2005 to 2015, which benefitted enormously to lift hundreds of millions out of poverty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
