The Delhi government on Monday announced the re-imposition of ban on the sale, storage, production and utilization of all types of fire crackers in Delhi during the festival of Diwali. The decision has been taken by environment minister Gopal Rai to decrease the pollution levels during winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rai speaking to the media said the Delhi police will be given strict instructions to enforce the ban all over the city. The Delhi government has maintained this ban for the past three years. Rai said Delhi\u2019s air quality has significantly improved over the past few years. Rai said the air quality has to be improved further. Rai appealed to the authorities of the NCR states to not grant firecracker licenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rai stressed on the importance of people\u2019s safety while celebrating the festival of Diwali. He appealed the people of Delhi for a collective effort in saving lives. He said the Delhites will celebrate Diwali with lamps and lights. Rai added the government authorities have started monitoring of pollution hotspots to implement a winter action plan as Diwali approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last year the Delhi government had imposed a fine of Rs 200 and six months in jail on anyone found bursting crackers during Diwali. The government further warned storage, sale and production of fire crackers in Delhi could result in a fine of Rs 5000 and three years of imprisonment under section 9B of the explosives Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delhi is world\u2019s most polluted capital. Various factors such as traffic fumes and general weather patterns contribute to the high pollution levels in the city. The air turns particularly toxic in winter when farmers in neighbouring states burn crop stubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And fireworks during the Diwali worsens the air quality as low wind speeds trap the pollutants in the lower part of the atmosphere. The air is filled with smog which covers the whole city at this time of the year. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
