Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday proposed an additional 10 per cent GST be levied on diesel vehicles as the people do not seem in mood to listen anytime soon. He added that he will meet Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing a gathering at SIAM 63rd Annual Convention in Delhi, the Union Minister asserted that pollution is a serious issue and it is causing health menace. He also expressed concern about the increased pollution caused by diesel vehicles and stated that there should be a reduction in the number of diesel cars on roads. In addition, he pointed out that there has been a decline in production of diesel cars since 2014. He noted that diesel cars accounted for 52 per cent of total production before 2014 and at present they constitute only 18 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, reacting to media reports regarding pollution tax, the Union Minister noted that there is an urgent need to clarify media reports suggesting an additional 10% GST on the sale of diesel vehicles. He added that it is essential to clarify that there is no such proposal currently under active consideration by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At SIAM 63rd Annual Convention, he remarked that India should aim at becoming world\u2019s No. 1 automobile manufacturer. He expressed that he is confident to achieve the target under Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s leadership. He also explained that before achieving the target, there is a hurdle in an effort to become competitive in the global market, underlining that they have to cut down the logistics cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking about the construction of highways, Nitin Gadkari mentioned that by December, they will complete construction of highways worth Rs 65,000 crore only around Delhi. Elaborating on the same, he noted that Delhi-Dehradun can be travelled in 2 hours, Delhi-Haridwar can be travelled in 1.5 hours, Delhi-Katra in 4 hours, Delhi-Amritsar in 8 hours and Delhi-Mumbai in 12 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, he stated that in line with their commitments to achieve Carbon Net Zero by 2070 and to minimize air pollution levels caused by hazardous fuels such as diesel, including the rapid growth in automobile sales, it is imperative to actively embrace cleaner and greener alternative fuels. These fuels should be import substitutes, cost-effective, indigenous and pollution-free, he continued.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
