With another confirmed case of Nipah virus reported in Kerala’s Kozhikode on Friday, the state administration ordered breaks for educational institutions in the district until September 24. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) announced plans to purchase 20 extra vials of antibody vaccinations to treat affected people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Friday, a 39-year-old man’s sample tested positive for Nipah virus infection in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, bringing the overall number of cases to six. There are now four active cases after two persons died due to the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A 24-year-old health worker on Wednesday became Kerala’s sixth confirmed Nipah case since the recent breakout. Since the outbreak, Kerala has issued multiple alerts. The rise in overall instances forced adjacent Karnataka to release safety measures as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Nipah virus strain found in Kerala is the Bangladesh form, which spreads through humans and is distinguished by high fatality despite low infectivity. The virus, for which there is no vaccine, spreads through contact with infected bats, pigs, or humans and has a 75% fatality rate among those infected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is the fourth time the virus has been identified in the state. It was discovered in Kozhikode in 2018 and 2021, as well as in Ernakulam in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICRM) DG Rajeev Bahl, India has reached out to Australia to obtain 20 extra doses of monoclonal antibody for the treatment of Nipah virus infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With many Nipah outbreaks recorded and a significant fatality rate compared to Covid, Bahl stated that the ICMR is also intending to begin work on developing a vaccine against the viral disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In light of the Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode district, the Kerala High Court on Friday urged the state government to establish directions, if necessary, for the pilgrimage to Sabarimala when it opens for the monthly puja.
