Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said farmers of Karnataka have incurred a loss of Rs 30,000 crore due to drought. According to him there is a crop loss of 42 lakh hectares and 216 out of 236 taluks of the state have been declared drought hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said there has been a crop loss of 42 lakh hectares in the state. According to the National Disaster Response fund (NDRF) the state has sought Rs 4860 crore from the union government. A team from the central government has also visited the drought hit area. Siddaramaiah was addressing people during the inauguration of the historic Mysuru Dasara festival. He added the state government had earlier declared droughts in 195 Taluks of the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the cabinet sub-committee drought has been announced in 21 Taluks. A total of 216 taluks have been declared drought hit. Siddaramaiah said the state government will provide input subsidies to the farmers for relief measures, employment, water for the cattle, fodder and drinking water. The Karnataka CM said this year they were witnessing green drought where crops have grown but there is no yield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This comes at a time when the raging Cauveri river water sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu. The CM spoke to the media after the inauguration of the 100th<\/sup> year anniversary celebrations of Babbur Farms, Millets Mela and symposium on Horticultural crops at the Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agriculture and Horticulture Sciences In Chitradurga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Karnataka Chief Minister said crops were grown in an area of 80 lakh hectares and 42 lakh hectares of crop had been damaged. As a result the state and the farmers are in trouble. The Central drought study Team is reviewing the case. Chitradurga is a drought prone district and is affected even more.
