The United States Treasury on Wednesday announced sanctions on 10 Hamas members, operatives and financial facilitators, including a key commander, as war rages after the Hamas group’s surprise attack on Israel on October 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The US agency in a statement mentioned that the new sanctions target individuals based in Gaza and elsewhere, including Sudan, Turkey, Algeria and Qatar. The statement added that the United States is taking swift and decisive action to target Hamas’s financiers and facilitators following its brutal and unconscionable massacre of Israeli civilians, including children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Hamas group launched a surprise assault inside Israel on October 7, killing 1,400 people. Following Israel declared war and commenced retaliatory strikes. Nearly 3,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to Hamas health authorities. The US sanctions come as President Joe Biden visits Israel on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
United States Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen mentioned that the US Treasury has a long history of effectively disrupting terror finance and that they will not hesitate to use their tools against Hamas. She further said that Washington will continue to take all steps necessary to deny Hamas the ability to raise funds for carrying out atrocities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, the US designated Hamas as a terrorist organization. Reportedly, so far, the Treasury said it has taken aim at nearly 1,000 individuals and entities connected to terrorism and terrorist financing by the Iranian regime and proxies including Hamas and Hezbollah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday, Joe Biden met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and affirmed that the US will continue to support the Jewish nation and ensure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself. US President Joe Biden asserted that Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organisation by both the US and Israel, slaughtered more than 1,300 people, including 31 Americans.
