Reports said that in the Yogi Adityanath led state, police have issued a notice to the Puja committees barring non-veg items during the Maha Asthami and Maha Navami celebrations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Kolkata celebrates Durga Puja, North India celebrates Navaratri. Though both the festivals stem from the worship of avatars of Maa Durga, celebrations are quite distinct. Durga Puja has its own flavour, its own rules and it is not a replication of Navaratri, where usually people observe fast and eat vegetarian dishes for nine days. Unlike Navaratri celebrations, a majority of Bengalis across the globe celebrate Durga Puja by consuming fish and meat. However, there are few Bengalis who willingly consume vegan food these days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/silcharweeb\/status\/1714309745258172844\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the unknown, Bengalis often consider having meat and fish during the festival as a several decades old tradition. It is also believed that to celebrate the death of Mahishasura who was killed by Ma Durga in an epic battle, people cook an abundance of fish and sacrificial meat. In addition, to Bengalis, Ma Durga is the mother and Daughter and the Durga Puja is considered as her homecoming. It is said that Ma Durga is welcomed with the best dishes: fish and meat. Hence, barring non-veg dishes in Bengali\u2019s Durga Puja celebration is a mere attempt to ask Bengalis to celebrate the year-long awaited festival in North India\u2019s Navaratri way, by forgoing their own traditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who have been to Kolkata during Durga Puja will know that the auspicious occasion has never been a only religious festival. It is a festival where people not only worship the goddess but also relish a variety of cuisines. The celebrations are so unique that UNESCO added Durga Puja in Kolkata to its 2021 list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, giving international recognition to the festival.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports further stated that if the warning is not considered then the Puja committee members can face consequences like Mohammed Aklaq.&nbsp; In 2015, 52-year-old Mohammed Akhlaq was killed on suspicion of slaughtering a cow.
