The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) panel on Wednesday has unanimously endorsed the replacement of India with Bharat in their forthcoming textbooks. This change was proposed several months ago and has now received formal approval. The change is intended to emphasize the traditional and culturally rooted name Bharat for the nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the approval, upcoming NCERT books will reflect this alteration, affecting the way the country is referred to in educational materials. Reports said, a high-level committee for social sciences, formed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to revise the school curriculum had recommended replacing the name \u2018India\u2019 with \u2018Bharat\u2019 in textbooks and also introducing classical history instead of ancient history in the curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Notably, the Article 1(1) of the Constitution already states, \u2018India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States\u2019. Speaking on the matter, committe\u2019s chairperson CI Issac said that Bharat, an age-old name finds its mention in ancient texts such as Vishnu Purana, which is 7000 years old. He added that the term India started being used commonly only after the establishment of the East India Company and the battle of Plassey in 1757. Therefore, the committee has unanimously recommended that the name Bharat should be used in textbooks for students across classes, he mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The name Bharat in place of India first appeared officially after the government sent out G20 invites hosted by the President in the name of the President of Bharat, instead of the President of India. Later, the name change was observed in the nameplate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Summit in New Delhi that read Bharat instead of India. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reportedly, the NCERT is revising the curriculum of the school textbooks in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Furthermore, the council has recently formed a 19-member National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) to finalise the curriculum, textbooks and learning material for these classes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
