India abstained from voting on a motion in the UN General Assembly that demanded an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and Hamas in order to end hostilities. It also demanded unrestricted entry for humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Israel responded to Hamas’ extraordinary attacks on October 7 with a huge counteroffensive that resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 10th Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly, which was reconvened, saw the 193 members cast votes on a draught resolution that was proposed by Jordan and co-sponsored by over 40 countries, including Bangladesh, the Maldives, Pakistan, Russia, and South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With 120 countries voting in support, 14 voting against, and 45 abstaining, the resolution titled protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations was enacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other than India, the following nations refrained: Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Ukraine, and the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The US expressed indignation at the omission of evil in the resolution produced by Jordanians, which omitted any reference to the terrorist organisation Hamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 193-member assembly took into consideration a change to the language that was co-sponsored by the US and Canada before casting a vote on the resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A paragraph stating that the general assembly unequivocally rejects and condemns the terrorist attacks by Hamas that took place in Israel starting on 7 October 2023 and the taking of hostages, demands the safety, well-being, and humane treatment of the hostages in compliance with international law, and calls for their immediate and unconditional release was sought to be inserted into the resolution in the amendment by Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Along with 87 other countries, India voted in favour of the modification; 55 other members voted against it, and 23 abstained. The two-thirds majority of members present and voting prevented the draught amendment from being enacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dennis Francis, the 78th session of the UNGA’s president, declared that the proposed amendment could not be approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The resolution, written by Jordan, demanded an early, robust, and long-lasting humanitarian ceasefire that would result in the end of hostilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also called for the unhindered, prompt, adequate, and uninterrupted supply of basic commodities and services, such as gasoline, power, water, food, and medical supplies, to all civilians residing in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
