Two passenger trains collided in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, resulting in at least 13 deaths and over 50 injuries, according to sources citing local police. The 08532 Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger and the 08504 Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger special were the two trains that were involved, according to the Railways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a statement, the latter may have crashed with the Palasa-bound train at around 7 o’clock at night due to human error, with the Rayagada-bound train most likely having jumped the signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Waltair division’s divisional railway manager, Sourabh Prasad, said the incident occurred at approximately 7:10 p.m. When the collision occurred, the Vishakhapatnam-Palasa train was waiting on the track between the Kothavalasa block’s Alamanda and Kantakpalli railway stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Four of the second train’s bogies derailed into the nearby track as a result of the collision. Rescue efforts were impeded by the area’s complete darkness after the collision snapped power lines. The DRM said, the local police, National Disaster Response Force teams, and revenue authorities rushed to the spot to take up rescue and relief operations as soon as we learned about the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Multiple mangled coaches could be seen in what appeared to be complete darkness in videos and images that the public had uploaded from the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since the lines were obstructed, the railways declared that at least 13 trains had been cancelled, rerouted, or terminated. Each of the two trains comprised 14 coaches, according to railway officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tragedy on Sunday is the worst train disaster to occur since June 2, when the Coromandel Express rear-ended a parked goods train in the Balasore region of Odisha, resulting in the deaths of 296 people. A third train, the Yesvantpur Express, then collided with some of the coaches that had fallen into its path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to S Nagalakshmi, the district collector for Vizianagaram, rescue teams were dispatched minutes after the accident was reported on Sunday night. She announced that eight ambulances had been called into duty and that a control centre had been set up in the Collector’s Office with the toll-free number 9493589157.
