As the strong cyclonic storm continues to build over the Bay of Bengal, Cyclone Michaung (pronounced migjaum) is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam, near to Bapatla, in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday morning. Over the past few hours, the weather system has brought in severe downpours to various locations in Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Private companies requested that staff members work from home till things get better. Strong gusts and rain caused walls, electric poles, and trees to fall. In the Tamil Nadu capital, rain-related incidents claimed the lives of eight individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Metro stations experienced waterlogging, while floodwaters forced the temporary suspension of medical services at government hospitals. On social media, videos of a mugger crocodile traversing a submerged road became viral as well. Internet and power outages were caused by the persistent downpour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many flights and trains were cancelled as a result of the cyclone, which negatively impacted transportation services. Due to the lack of aircraft until Tuesday morning, the runway at Chennai airport flooded, resulting in congestion and annoyance for travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, severe cyclonic storm Michaung over west-central Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 7 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 2:30 am about 20 km north-northeast of Nellore, 170 km north of Chennai, 150 km south of Bapatla and 210 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam. Parts of the wall cloud region are over land because the system is almost directly approaching the coast in a northerly direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, even though the amount of rain lessened marginally throughout the night, the Tamil Nadu government decided to designate Monday and Tuesday as public holidays in the districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu. Rainfall totals for the last 24 hours were 29 cm in Perungudi, Chennai; 28 cm in Avadi, Tiruvallur district; and 22 cm in Mamallapuram, Chengalpet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
