The BJP announced on Tuesday that Bhajan Lal Sharma will be the new Chief Minister of Rajasthan. Sharma defeated Pushpendra Bhardwaj of the Congress by more than 48,081 votes winning the Sanganer Assembly seat. The results had been declared on December 3, a full nine days ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Royal Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa h as been named as the deputy chief ministers of Rajasthan by the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This announcement comes a day after naming the chief minister for Madhya Pradesh, where the party chose Mohan Yadav, a minister from the outgioing Shivraj Singh Chouhan government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Rajasthan, former chief minister Vasundhara Raje, who was one of the frontrunners for CM, announced that Sharma had been chosen the Chief Minister of Rajasthan. Raje is said not to have enjoyed the confidence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Among others whose names did the rounds were Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat, seer Mahant Balaknath, royal Diya Kumari, Anita Bhadel, Manju Baghmar, and Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The choice of Sharma has surprised many but the CM designate has held the position of BJP general secretary four times. The choice of Sharma, a Brahmin, is also notable since the post Mandal wave had been harsh on the community. The choice of a tribal (Vishnu Deo Sai), OBC (Mohan Yadav) and a Brahmin (Sharma) as chief ministers of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan indicates the BJP’s attempt at a rainbow coalition of castes ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Congress, which had campaigned the three states, had been raising the demand for an OBC census which seems to have been ignored by the electorate. The pitting of a caste coalition of the BJP against the Congress’ OBC only strategy is expected to help the BJP secure a hat-trick in the Lok Sabha elections, a fact noted by Prime Minister Modi in his victory speech in Delhi after the counting in the four states which went to polls. The counting for Mizoram took place on the next day, December 4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The BJP has reasons to gloat ahead of the Lok Sabha elections given the overconfidence that brought down the Congress governments in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
