Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena said, up to 10 people lost their lives as a result of the two days of intense rain that damaged various southern districts and interrupted daily activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The top bureaucrat added that the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) prediction of heavy rain was also wrong, since the impacted districts had exceptionally heavy rain within two days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rain has caused 10 fatalities in the districts of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli. At the Secretariat, he said, some people perished from electrocution, while others died from wall collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He provided some information regarding the weather, stating that record-breaking rainfall and flooding were experienced in the southern districts, mainly in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Total casualties are nine, Tirunelveli District Collector KP Karthikeyan said, providing data on the district’s flood situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to the intense rain, Thirunelveli and Tenkasi district schools and colleges have been given a break. In a same vein, Thuthukudi district has been designated a general vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The intense rain in these areas on Wednesday, train services were also affected. A list of cancelled and partially cancelled trains was issued by the Southern Railway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both Nagercoil-Tirunelveli Exp Spl and Nagercoil-Kanniyakumari Exp Spl were completely cancelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While rescue and relief efforts were underway, flooding proceeded to engulf several communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu MK Stalin Chief Minister requested that the damage caused by the Michaung storm and the intense rains in the southern districts be classified as a national tragedy and that a disaster relief fund be established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He claimed that the devastation inflicted by the intense downpour in the southern districts has not been witnessed in a century.
