In a case involving disproportionate assets, the Madras High Court on Thursday sentenced K Ponmudy, the leader of the DMK and a minister for Tamil Nadu, to three years in prison and a penalty of Rs 50 lakh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The medical records of the minister and his spouse were submitted, stating that the matter was rather old and that the minister was currently 73 years old and his wife was 60. The couple asked for a light penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tamil Nadu Minister K Ponmudy was fined Rs 50 lakh apiece by the court and given a term of three years in simple jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Madras High Court delayed the punishment for 30 days, enabling the convicted parties to file a higher appeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a major blow, Tamil Nadu minister K Ponmudy’s acquittal in the disproportionate assets case was overturned by the Madras High Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the then-AIADMK government was in power from 1996 to 2001, a case against Ponmudy and his wife was filed with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) in 2002. It was claimed that the couple’s income of Rs 1.4 crore was out of proportion to their known sources of income at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ponmudy accumulated illicit money, according to the DVAC, while serving as a minister in the state government from 1996 until 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ponmudy and his spouse were found not guilty on June 28 by a major sessions court in Vellore, on the grounds that the prosecution had not shown enough evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Principal District Judge of Vellore, N Vasanthaleela, acquitted the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister and senior DMK leader K Ponmudy and his wife cleared of all charges in the case of disproportionate assets filed with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption by Principal District Judge N Vasanthaleela of Vellore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following their acquittal by a Vellore court in June, Tamil Nadu Minister K Ponmudy and his wife were found not guilty in the disproportionate assets case. In August, the Madras High Court decided to review the decision on its own initiative.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
