Former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s aid Sanjay Singh has been selected as the Wrestling Federation of India’s new president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Thursday, December 21, the Wrestling Federation of India elections took place following multiple postponements earlier in the year. In New Delhi, the polling took place earlier in the day, and the counting got underway shortly after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
United World Wrestling, the world wrestling governing body, would be able to withdraw its suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India following the election of key positions in the organisation. India wrestlers have been competing as neutral athletes in international tournaments for the past few months, and the UWW has suspended WFI for not holding elections by the date they had set in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Delhi elections were conducted for fifteen positions, including those of president, treasurer, secretary-general, and senior vice president. A\u00a0former gold medallist Anita Sheoran\u00a0in the Commonwealth Games, and Sanjay Singh, the vice president of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Federation, were competing against each other for the presidency of the Wrestling Federation of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anita Sheoran, an Odisha native and Haryana native, was running to become the first female head of the national wrestling organisation. Famous wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat supported her when they demonstrated against departing Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh due to claims that he had harassed and stalked female wrestlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Sanjay Singh, a close ally of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has pledged to revive the heyday of wrestling, a sport that has recently produced several Olympic medallists for India. Some, including Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, expressed their concerns over Sanjay Singh running in the polls at their earlier-in-the-month meeting with Anurag Thakur, the minister of sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On January 18, wrestlers gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to publicly voice their charges of sexual exploitation and intimidation by Singh. This marked the start of the much-discussed demonstrations.
