In January 2024, both public and private sector banks will remain closed for 16 days in line with the Reserve Bank of India\u2019s calendar. The aforesaid holidays will not be uniformly applied across the country and may vary from region to region as the same holidays will be observed nationwide as public holidays while others will be treated as local holidays.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Central Bank (RBI) categorises bank holidays into three categories namely holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real time gross settlement holidays and banks closing of accounts. Internet banking services and ATMs will remain operational throughout the country on all days.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As per the RBI guidelines state that both public sector banks and private sector banks do not work on Sundays and on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Additionally, the banks also remain closed on public holidays, including regional holidays which are decided by the state governments.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 16 (Tuesday): Tusu Puja (West Bengal and Assam)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 17 (Wednesday): Guru Govind Singh Jayanti<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 21: Sunday<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 23 (Tuesday): Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 25 (Thursday): State Day (Himachal Pradesh)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an entire year, the major bank holidays include Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15), Gandhi Jayanti (October 2), and Christmas (December 25). Besides this, banks also remain closed on regional festivals like Diwali, Dussehra, Eid, Ganesh Chaturthi, Buddha Purnima and others.
