The BJP led Assam government, Centre and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) have signed a tripartite peace deal in Delhi. The Memorandum of Settlement has been signed in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The ULFA is the oldest insurgency group in Assam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reports stated that the peace deal with the oldest insurgent group of Assam aims to address issues like illegal immigration, land rights for indigenous communities and a financial package for Assam\u2019s development. After signing the deal, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Centre will ensure all the reasonable demands by ULFA and those will be met in a time-bound manner. He added that ULFA as an organisation will be disbanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing peace and stability in the northeast, Amit Shah said that the Centre wants to assure the ULFA leadership that their trust in the government to ensure the success of the peace process will be honoured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also asserted that the removal of the Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act (AFSPA) from many areas of Assam and other northeast states is proof that insurgency is nearly extinct in the region. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the peace deal with ULFA will solve the problem of insurgency in the region to a large extent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ULFA which was founded on April 7, 1979, in Sivasagar, Assam emerged with the objective of establishing an independent sovereign state for the indigenous Assamese people. The group started its armed operations in the late 1980s, led by figures such as Paresh Baruah, Arabinda Rajkhowa, and Anup Chetia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Initially, it was considered as a group aiding the needy and the poor, however, the United Liberation Front of Asom\u2019s (ULFA) tactics soon escalated to armed struggle against the Indian government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
