Due to a lack of proof, the CBI has closed two cases pertaining to suspected match-fixing in the Indian Premier League in 2019 (IPL) based on inputs from Pakistan, officials announced on Tuesday.

After learning that a network of individuals involved in cricket betting are influencing the outcome of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches based on inputs received from Pakistan, the agency filed two First Information Reports (FIRs) against seven individuals in May 2022.

In its initial formal complaint, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) listed as accused Dileep Kumar, based in Rohini, Delhi, and Gurram Vasu and Gurram Satish, based in Hyderabad. The second FIR cited Rajasthani nationals Sajjan Singh, Prabhu Lal Meena, Ram Avtar, and Amit Kumar Sharma as accused.

The CBI did not find enough evidence to move forward with the prosecution against them after almost two years of investigation.

In addition to providing grounds for suggesting the case be closed, the agency on December 23 submitted a closure report in a special court. The report included a thorough explanation of the charges and the findings of its investigation, according to agency officials.

According to them, the court will now have to determine whether to approve the agency’s report or mandate that it carry out additional research.

The agency had arrested these individuals on charges that they had been conducting the scam for over 10 to 13 years and that suspicious cash transfers had been made from their accounts, According to the officials.

The CBI has said that these people were using a Pakistani mobile number to communicate with people in that country.

According to the FIR, the two networks that were receiving feeds from Pakistan were inducing them for betting on the public.

The racketeers had bank accounts (mule accounts) with fictitious identities and know-your-customer (KYC) documentation, all while working with unnamed bank employees, the FIR said.

According to the sources, the CBI claimed that Dileep Kumar was running several bank accounts where domestic cash deposits over RsRs 43 lakh had been made since 2013, beyond economic rationale.

Additionally, the central agency claimed that between 2012 and 2021, cash deposits of ₹ 3.05 lakh (international) and Rs 4.55 crore (domestic) were made into the six bank accounts that Gurram Satish owned. In Gurram Vasu’s case, it was Rs 5.37 crore in the same time frame.

The agency had claimed that the transactions lacked an apparent commercial justification.
