The debris of Indian Air Force’s An-32 aircraft, which went missing over the Bay of Bengal in 2016 with 29 people onboard, has been found after over 7 years, said the Union Ministry of Defence on Friday.

According to an official statement, the search was conducted at a depth of 3,400 meters using different payloads, including a multi-beam Sound Navigation and Ranging (SONAR), synthetic aperture SONAR, and high-resolution photography.

The official statement further stated that an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), deployed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology, was used to locate the missing aircraft on the sea bed approximately 310 kilometers from the Chennai coast.

Additionally, the search images were scrutinised and found to be conforming with An-32 aircraft. The statement further said that this discovery at the probable crash site, with no other recorded history of any other missing aircraft report in the same area, points to the debris as possibly belonging to the crashed IAF AN-32 (K-2743).

In July 2016, the IAF’s An-32 aircraft with 29 people onboard mysteriously disappeared over the Bay of Bengal. As per the reports, the aircraft took off from the Tambaram Air Force Station in Chennai in the morning and was supposed to arrive at Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands but it went missing.

The authorities, however, lost radar contact with the aircraft at around 9:12 am when the plane was about 280 kilometers east of Chennai.

There were 6 crew members, 11 IAF personnel, two soldiers, one from the Indian Navy and other Indian Coast Guard, and 8 employed with the Naval Armament Depot among 29 people.

The search and rescue operation for the aircraft was one of the largest in India. The Indian Army soldiers used a submarine, surface vessels, and several aircraft for the mission. It was confirmed on August 1, 2016, that the aircraft did not have an underwater locator beacon. Unfortunately, the rescue mission was called off on September 15, 2016, and all people onboard were presumed dead.
